1982Sparks Headquarters Fire Station is a complete fire fighting community all under one roof. In order to leave enough space outside for the fire trucks to maneuver, the 25,000 square foot building could occupy only about a third of its site. So building was oriented vertically and was carved it dramatically out of brick. Using special brick shapes, the sliced off corners create rapier edges. The project fashioned an innovative solar hose-drying tower, and juxtaposed a freestanding stairwell. Brick came inside to provide the thermal mass need to store passive solar heat, and it was even used to cover the walls and floors of public areas. Brick not only succeeded in a design sense, it made good common sense, as well. The building houses four engine companies, with space for fire equipment and space for living, including a dormitory, kitchen, day room, and physical fitness area. It also contains offices for the fire chief and other city fire officials, and a meeting room for the community. "On a city building like this, you have to consider the life cycle cost of any material. Brick actually brought this building in under budget, and from now on, it will be virtually maintenance free."
